Trifid Nebula

Reflections on Emission

I think of the Trifid Nebula as the night sky underdog that won.

When I go through the process of selecting a target for a photograph, I often take my time deciding because once I start, most of my photos require between 25-40 hours of exposure time to get the final image. This means, depending on weather, I could spend as much as a month on a single target just to get one completed image.

So the things I look for are targets that fit my telescopes field of view in a way that will make the composition something I find compelling, and that the target is high enough above the horizon to not be shooting through too much atmosphere, which makes the images hazy. I also look for how many hours the target is up each night. Lastly, I look at the timing of the moon phases and whether or not I can use specialized filters to cut through the light pollution.

The Trifid has a lot going against it. It is surrounded by larger nebulae, each of which is relatively famous, such as the Eagle Nebula (The Pillars of Creation), the Omega Nebula, and it's next door neighbor the Lagoon Nebula. Two of the three rise higher in the sky from my location, which means they have less atmospheric issues to deal with, and are out longer for imaging each night. Lastly, they are each what's called Emission Nebulae, which makes them perfect candidates for shooting with those specialized filters I mentioned, allowing me to image them even when the moon is out.

The Trifid is special. Notice the two very distinct colors it offers. This makes it more challenging to shoot because the Trifid is both an emission nebula (red) and a good deal of reflection nebula (outer blues) forcing me away from relying on the specialized filters that would help me deal with the moon's light.

For these reasons, I went several years without ever imaging this poor underdog, but once I made the leap, and those very first images rolled in, I knew the Trifid would forever be a big part of my imaging time each year.

While the Trifid may be the underdog, it is the only Nebula of the four in that area whose beauty made the cut for this print store.
